hmm. well, it really does warm up and idle better since I replaced the generator, even on the colder mornings. It's very strange.

Low system voltage will make the FI run rich and keep a carbed car from opening
its chokes. Either way slows the engine warmup. Could this be what you've
noticed?

It's my carbed car in this case. and it doesn't actually have chokes. [ that's on my list of things to show the list. it's got dual weber 44 idfs and doesn't seem to have room for the choke ]

I measured the good generator and it comes out 3.9 ohms,
I re-measured the bad one and got 0.6 ohms.
so, it looks like the bad one is definitely shorted.

And if a shorted generator would put up less rotational resistance,
than a functioning one,  then that doesn't really explain the mystery.
