Batteries can fail completely - internal break or shorted plate. Oddly, it's more likely to do it with an alternator as high charging rates are certainly more likely to be fatal for an ailing battery. I don't think modern cars are wrong having alternators, but most owners of Type 3s don't need them. I applaud the work of DDB in answering a need from those who can get the benefit of a higher output. I don't even have a radio in my Variant, so I can carry on with the generator (dynamo), but if I did a lot of camping without many miles, an alternator would certainly recharge the leisure battery more easily.
