Just pull the belt fully out, then lock the reel. Push the fixed end backwards out of the reel spindle and push the steel pin sideways out of the nylon webbing. Then the belt will pull completely out of the reel. I push a large nail thru the slot in the spindle to hold it while I wash the belt.
