With no means of ingress, there's the possibility of building up a bit more 
vacuum in the case than you'd ideally want. I suspect that the only problems 
that this might cause would be that air would tend to be sucked in somewhere, 
and that somewhere would likely be around one end of the crank or the other. 
The main seal really won't seal much against pressure in that direction.

Air which got sucked in there might bring dirt in with it, but this isn't 
likely to be any worse than the majority of these engines which no longer have 
any hoses attached to their head breather ports.

Many replacement heads came with pads in the casting which could be used to 
install the breather ports.
