The big problem I've seen with most parts stores these days is they just want to look up your car in the big book to find the part. If you go in and try to buy something just by size or similar spec they are completely lost. Go to one of the major auto parts websites and try to find a part without entering the make/model/engine. When I was a kid I would go with my dad to this one store where the owner could walk straight to the shelf for any part based on any sort of information you gave him without even looking in the books.
