Well, I got it apart.  I went ahead and removed the upper ball joint as 
well. Once I did this it was clear that the lower ball joint, while 
mostly out was wedged or stuck a bit not just being held in  by the 
upper torsion arm. So, a cold chisel tot he slot on the clamp, and 
getting a bit more vigorous with tapping and jiggling things  got it 
apart.
