I don't recall if there were screws along the front of the pad in the '73 I dismantled, but since the pad on it was even more shot than the one in my '70 I didn't really pay attention either. All of the pads I've seen recently have had the screws, but they've been earlier cars. At this point in the discussion I think it's safe to say "there might be screws at the front edge, so check for them in case".
