Re: [T3] Stupid idea? - fan housing

<x-flowed>When I had this problem it turned out that my fan had self-destructed.

I certainly recommend you take it apart and see what's going on. I also recommend you take off the muffler before you open the fan shroud. It makes access to the bolts MUCH easier, and makes taking the whole thing apart simple without removing the engine - I removed all external engine parts and did have any particular problem reaching anything once the muffler was off .

Russ has a way of doing it without removing the muffler, but Russ got paid a flat rate for doing the job, so time was of the essence.

Hi I'm about to do something potentially stupid and need some feedback:

my 68' square recently developed the dreaded "loose bolt rattling
around inside fan housing" problem.

I think there must be an easier method to extract that bolt than engine
removal. This is my plan:

1) since the fan housing is round, the loose bolt should be resting at
the bottom of the housing.
2) drill a ~ 1/2" diameter hole in the bottom of the housing
3) stick a 3/8" diameter cow magnet into the hole and fish for the
bolt.
4) withdraw magnet and bolt
5) seal hole with JB weld

Anybody see anything wrong or potentially detrimental in this idea??
Anyone tried it?

TIA,
Todd
