Quite a few years ago the Japanese revised their bolt head standards so that 
the typical JIS bolt head is 1mm smaller than the same size DIN bolt. I read an 
article about this at the time, which included an extimate of the number of 
TONs of steel which this change would save over some number of years. 

Yeah, we get used to the "normal" bolts requiring 10, 13, 15, 17, & 19mm 
wrenches, but the JIS bolts are now all one step down. The most common wrench 
sizes on them are 12 & 14.
