Yes, 6V shims are different. I MAY have some here; let me know if I should look 
for them.

Your ring gear photo really doesn't look all that bad, but you should probably 
check your starter to make sure the drive is free to move all the way into 
mesh, and that the solenoid actually pushes it that far. I think the solenoids 
of that era were adjustable, so yours might need to be tweaked.
