We went on a tour of Wolfsburg a few years ago, and there are special bays in the factory where they refinish cars damaged on the production line. By the time they're painted and fitted there's a lot of value tied up in the car so its worth spending time (and therefore money) correcting paint defects. They also cut up 1 body shell every N 1000 to check the welding etc. Body shells are only worth about E500 (IIRC) so uts a small cost to ensure the quality. Don't know if they did this in the 60s and 70s though ? -- Matt. UK.
