I actually don't think this problem has come up before.

There are actually 5 different vent openings under your windshield. Numbers 1, 
3, & 5 bring heated air from the engine, while numbers 2 & 4 bring fresh air in 
from in front of the windshield.

If you could tell which vents this smoke came in from that would help determine 
the problem. If it came from the engine then you would need to look back there 
for a solution. If it came in with the fresh air, then either you picked up 
someone's cigarette butt in your vent louvers or the electric fan developed a 
problem.

Does the electric fan in your vent system work? Is there some chance that it 
does not and that this switch for it was left in the ON position?
