I wouldn't use it because the fibers break with vibration, and then you have airborne glass fibers that can wind up in your lungs.

It's about noise, all right. These boxes are mufflers to catch the fan pulses, vibrations and noise from the engine that would otherwise be transmitted along the heating ducts. They also help smooth out the airstream, though I'm not sure that mattered to the designers.

I think it's a waste of effort to even try cleaning the batting unless you're sure you can't walk into a nearby junkyard and pick up replacements from another car or get them shipped by another listee. The only thing that can really go wrong with these units is if they get wet inside -- which can support evil molds as well as bad smells -- and every Type 3 from '64 on (I'm guessing) has 'em.
