Is this when the rod knock started? It sounds possible. The engine only holds 
2.7 quarts, so you were pretty much empty.

Does your oil light come on each time you turn your key ON? It should, and then 
it should go out after the engine starts. It's important to note that it 
actually comes on at first, just so you know that the bulb and the sensor are 
working.
