I've had Type III and Type I distributors fail from worn bushings in the central shaft. This give the effect of slightly randomizing timing and dwell. ;) In practice, when this has happened to me, it gives the effect of switching back and forth between running well and running terribly.

Like Steven A., I believe, said already, you should start with running through the very basic tune-up specs before you get into anything involved or costly.
