When I was considering the options, I went to the DMV website and I
could use either "Historical" or "Vintage" Plates. The NYDMV has two
different categories. I went looking online for original '71 NY plates.
Couldn't find anything. Trouble is (as I'm sure some of you know), they
have to be original-issue plates with NO re-painting of any kind on
them. If you want "Vintage" plates you even need to have the '71 sticker
on them from wayback. I imagine there are a lot of people in NY with
vintage/historical cars that have already looted any leftover supply of
vintage plates... I think I'm going to just turn in the plates for the
winter. The only good thing is that the NY DMV has a "special" line for
plate surrender. I've never had to wait more than five minutes. Getting
it registered again is the real headache. Usually takes over an hour.
