I know first hand why. Way back in the early 80s I was telling one of my

I owned one of the first '74 Dashers sold in the Des Moines area. The
drive train was an Audi Fox. Which replace the Audi S90. I traded an S90
for the Dasher.

VW used a lot of Audi (and NSU) engineering expertise (particularly on unibody contruction and FWD powertrains) on their departure from the air-cooling era. So, the earliest VW waterpumpers certainly had a lot of Audi running gear, if not Audi/NSU engineering expertise. Whether this was good or bad is debatable :)
