Basically, there would have been 4, not counting the 36hp and the 1700
style bus engine.

Early 40hp (look like the ones in my picture, but shorter)
Early 1500 (like the ones I show)
late 40hp (like the late 1600 but shorter)
late 1600

Yes, the later ones are lighter, but then I have seen more of them
broken. I don't ever remember seeing an early one broken. Bent yes, but
never broken. Mine were bent due to my error. I shouldn't have turned it
over until I had pulled the rockers.
As I say, I am trying to stay as close to original as possible, and want
a matched set.

No, I am going with the "S" dual carbs, but I am keeping the single port
heads. Basically internally it will be a '66 1600cc when I am done, but
look like a 1500cc "S" due to the early tin, and distributor.
The reason VW went to the newer pushrods was not only to save weight,
but they are cheaper to make.
Look at my pictures, and you will see the extra machining that went into
the early ones.
