Re: [T3] Wasser engine

<x-flowed>The Wbx is sometimes called the type-v engine at least on STF. I tend to agree with Per that it has more parts in common with a type1-3 than a type iv. It is just comming into its own here in the States, but has been developed by tuners and such in europe for sometime now. It was also knows as the VW mechnics retirement fund (or something like that. Russ?) As a owner of 3-87 Vanagons, 1 type1 and several type 3, this is just my take on it.

The wbx enging could be considered the final version of the flat4 design by VW. Only to be suprassed by Porsche, and possibally Suburau or Alfa. Otgener(sp?) may have been envolved in the development of this engine, as they did produce ans still produce a 6 cylinder version of this engine in a 2.5l version IIRC.

Your milage may vary

The Wasserboxer as used in Vanagons is *definitely not* a Type 1 or Type 3 engine... It was developed from the Type 4-based aircooled engines they used in Type 2s up into the early 80s.

Then I suggest you have a look at a wbx and type 4 engine again, Jens. The wbx is clearly a type 1 engine that has been converted for water cooling, and increased displacement. The certain give-away is the location of the fuel pump mount, which is located on top, which is next to the distributor on the wbx and type 1, and to the side, below the distributor on the type 4.

The fact that it "looks similar" or that it might have some ancillary aggregates in the same location as on a bug engine doesn't mean it is a bug engine. If you go by similarities alone then a Type 4 engine is also a Type 1 engine.
