Should I just plug the AAR on my car and then set the idle/timing? Technically, it's supposed to close once the heating element has heated up the spring. Of course, if I were to do that and then unplug the AAR the idle would jump up until I got the AAR fixed (or just leave it plugged until fixed).

Starting in '70 the AT got a different AAR. That AT-only AAR has an integral internal heater, not a heated stud.
