In between the intake runners, in the middle, is an alum casting called the 
intake air distributor. If the part you're talking about is on top of this, 
above the intake runners, then that is a temp sensor. The cold start valve is 
on the under side of the intake sir distributor, on the right side directly 
under the center line of the 2 right side intake runners.

That sounds like the plate that is supposed to hold the temp switch for the 
cold start valve. If the temp switch is gone, then maybe the CSV is also gone, 
but that would leave a large hole in the intake air distributor which would 
have to be plugged in order for the engine to run.

I'll try to see if I can point you to a photo of the CSV in the Bentley when I 
get home tonight.
