The pulley should only be taken apart to adjust the belt tension. It's virtually impossible to put the pulley back together with the belt in there. You are VERY likely to damage the pulley by forcing it together with the belt in there. To replace the belt, remove the generator hold down strap and tilt the generator while you gently pry the belt into place in the pulley.
