There are 28 different distributors listed in the electronic parts catalogue, it also includes whcih distributors were fitted to the M236, M239 and M249 engines, and also which engine numbers they were introduced to. Because it is not possible to copy the text out of the catalogue, I took screen shots of the list.

We can thank VW for some confusion here. M249 is the option number for an automatic transmission, but before automatics were introduced the M249 option code was used to designate a lowered compression version of the 1500S engine (flat top as opposed to domed pistons; 1500 engines had a similar option M240 which substituted dished pistons for the standard flat ones). That's the M249 Dave was referring to, not the auto trans.
