Regarding the # 3 retard, I've heard every permutation of this. I don't know if 
any type 3s got it, or even if any type 1s got it. I've never noticed it and I 
haven't found it mentioned in any difinitive reference. OTOH, it seems to be 
common knowledge, so who knows.

Personally, I'd put the drive gear back where it belongs. Keep in mind also 
that we also occasionally come across distributors where the drive dog has been 
rotated 180 to "help" this problem. While all these solutions can be shown to 
work, they will also all come back to haunt you, or a subsequent owner, 
someday.
