Turns out my problem was, indeed, just the shift linkage. One of th e two plastic side pieces had popped out of the coupler. It's weird that I could select reverse, 3rd, and 4th, but not 1st or 2nd, but that fixed it. I think this bit had to be dangling by a thread for quite some time, as the shifter used to rattle and buzz quite a bit, and was always a bit balky into 1st.
