[T3] Thanks (was clutch fork bush removal)
<x-flowed>Thanks for the responses to my querry about removing the brass clutch fork
bushing (it was the one on the right side, Jim). My home depot didn't have
a tap large enough, so I ended up buying a 1/2 in. "internal pipe wrench"
that needed a bit of Dremmeling to fit the bushing, but after I sized it up
it was a matter of minutes until I had the bushing out. The hack saw blade
method seems like it would work in a pinch with no special tools, but I was
worried about scoring the case.
btw/ the clutch fork kits from Mid-America are lame: the circlips were WAY
too large (larger internal diameter than the fork rod itself... not even
close!) so I had to use my old ones, and after all that trouble getting the
right side brass bushing out, the replacement was not large enough to seat
firmly in the hole in the case (sliding in and out easily) and thus is
probably rotating every time I depress the clutch. Since my tranny is dying
(poor leaky thing's got about 135k on it, so not bad!) I'm due for a
replacement within the next year, otherwise I'd be very pissed off about
the internal bushing (which I assume will eventually wear down the hole in
the case if it is rotating?). Nevertheless, the new fork/bearing/spring
make an amazing difference.... clutch jerk is gone, and for some reason
it's easier to shift between gears.
Anyway, thanks again for the responses. It is so cool to know that if
(when!) you get in a jam--as I was with the confounded bushing--sound
advise is just an email away!
