Jim , you know alot more of the history than I do but when they started making FI was that the same time that VW switched to 12V? I know my 6V choke elements have an L&R on them but I don't know if VW ever produced dual carbs with 12 volts. If not you can compare the way the springs are wound to determine which is L or R. Sorry I can't be any help. ( While we are on the subject, does anyone here run their PDSIT's without hooking up the choke? I switched over to 12 volt and I still have the 6 volt choke elements in but with a voltage drop on it. I was looking at a photo over on the Samba of an oilcooler set up and I noticed that they had the original carbs in it but there was no wire connection to the choke. My car is not a daily driver and is tucked away in the garage till the snow and cold go away so warming up is not so much the issue. Also what do you think of the idiot manual's tako on it.
