Just something to be aware off. That's interesting. I thought the stock shafts in 68-9 were also 6mm. It's been awhile since I've looked at them, so I'm probably just remembering wrong. The attachment to those smooth round shafts is a weak point in the design, and if the earlier shafts were even smaller than the 68-9, then they would be even worse than the ones I have experience with. Sometime in '68 VW came out with improved arms that attached to the shafts with a clamp instead of a set screw. Those arms are a terrific improvement and anyone who stumbles across those arms should grab them. Even if you don't need them yourself someone here will be grateful for them. Does anyone know if a similar arm was ever introduced for the earlier 6mm shafts? Starting in '70, the shaft got much bigger and the attachment is by a taper, which is MUCH more secure. You can spot these by the axial cap nut that's on the end of the shaft. '72.5-3 got the same shaft, but the nut is just a standard hex nut, covered by a black plastic cap. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
