If you just mean the lock knob that protrudes from the top of the window sill, 
at the inside rear of the window, then this is just a plastic knob screwed onto 
a thin metal rod.

That metal rod is only about 5" long. Yours must have gotten bent somehow.

The best way to straighten it would be to unscrew the knob from it completely 
and slide some kind of strong metal tube down over it. Use that tube to bend 
the rod back straight. As the rod straightens, you should be able to slide the 
tube farther and farther down the rod.

I don't know what to suggest that you use for a tube. Maybe a couple pieces of 
that brass hobby tubing that can be telescoped together to make it stronger 
than a single thin brass tube. Some nice 1/4" steel tubing would be perfect.

You can certainly do this by going inside, but it's a nightmare that you'd 
prefer to avoid.
