Maybe the whole cluster got moved back > ~10 mm at some point. Well, I checked, and the clutch cable changed late in '65 but the length didn't change. The adjusting nut and locknut changed to a wingnut somewhat later in '65, so the thread never changed. There was no change in the clutch shaft near that time. The Bowden tube never changed. So I have no idea what about the clutch cable changed.
