Okay, thanks. All I could remember at the moment was that there was an obvious 
way to put it back together, but the obvious way was wrong.

Can you explain what this looks like a bit more, and how it's done. I 
understand that it just "catches and holds" the spring in a partially extended 
position. I just don't know what it looks like and how it's done. I assume you 
insert it somehow when the hood is mostly down, so you can still reach in 
there. Or do you find a small child from the neighborhood who will be willing 
to get in the trunk while you close it.

BTDT. The rope broke. Scary,  should have had a better rope.
