I've never had any luck at all trying to inspect those bushings by sight. 
They're just in there so deep and recessed and dark that they always look fine 
to me. The one that I replaced that turned out to be worn to a C looked okay to 
me.... I was conpletely surprised to find it worn out when I pulled it.

BTW, if you buy a rebuilt starter from Bosch, it will come with a replacement 
bushing and a note stating that the Bosch warrantee is only valid if the 
bushing is replaced along with the starter.
