The dual port engines had a pipe that is about 8mm in diameter. The balance pipe helps with a smoother running engine, as the intake vacuum pulses from each individual cylinder is smoothed out, and blended a little with the other 3. My first import car was a dual side draft SU carbed engine. They didn't have a balance pipe, but the 2 carbs were side by side on the intake manifold. On our cars, the 2 carbs are about 24" apart, on seperate manifolds. -- Russ Wolfe '71 FB AT '66 FB MT '64 T34 (not running) '65 T1 (not running) '05 KIA Sorento SUV russw@classicvw.org http://www.classicvw.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
