No covers - the flap behind directs the heat out or up (or somewhere between). There used to be a foam lining to seal better - it's probably crumbled and that's why you may still get heat out at the bottom. I had to rebuild my valve box down there, and pleased to say it looks good and works - lot of work to do it though. If you still have slots, that's all it ever had on the face. Dave.
