<x-flowed>The concern is that with applied products that stick to the surface, and air bubbles can lead to moisture condensing out on cold days onto the surface of the metal between the insulation and the metal.
To eliminate this problem the thought was to brush on a material (tar) directly onto the metal eliminating any potential air gaps and then applying an insulating material onto the tar.
Anything used that allows humid air to condense to water can cause hidden rust forming conditions. This would include mats and loose blankets even if form fitting.
