I'm not familiar with the early year construction, but in the later years the 
ignition lock & switch are housed in a separate casting which holds the 2 parts 
together. You have to take the lock cyl out of this casting before you can see 
the key code. The lock cyl itself is only about 1.5" long, so if you are 
looking at something twice this long you still have to disassemble it a bit.

To get the lock out of the cast sleeve, find a `1/8" hole in the side of the 
casting where you can push in a pointed probe and depress a flat spring. Once 
the flat spring is depressed you should be able to pull the lock cylinder out.
