A tin-lid would do the job perfectly well.  I do have some of the proper shaped
discs, but it wouldn't be worth sending one.  You may even get away with a metal
strip instead.
You can get one off a later Beetle with the front access hole and cover below
the (short) hood.  It's the same cover plate and disc, but the backing disc is
inside the spare wheel well and doesn't rot out easily.
