I bought a large pipe wrench for installation. I think that's
what you'd call it in the US? The gap between the jaws can be
adjusted to one of about 10 pre-set gaps. The jaws are heavily
serrated. Its quite slim compared to the same size of proper
adjustable wrench (i.e. one that would do 2"). Even so it only
just fitted into the gap and it took me ages to tighten them.

The previous muffler was an aftermarket beetle style i.e.
mounted direcly to the exhaust port with a long pipe in place
of the rear HE. I was very lucky to have a couple of rear HE
from a parts car when I fitted the new stock muffler.

As for the gaskets - the supplier (http://www.status-vw.co.uk/)
didn't have a fitting kit so I went to an exhaust wholesaler and
we pored over his catalogues until we found something the right ID
and thickness. Then I unwound it from the outside until it just
fitted into the seat. They are made of a cardboard and foil
sandwich so paring them down this way is easy.
