Re: [T3] leaky transmission. [ strange one.. ]

<x-flowed>
I actually spoke with rancho today.
got two pieces of info from them.

1.) they actually have the part. [ everyone else who fooled me today, had type1 tubes. ]
the one with the flange for the z-bar.

2.) he swears that the the axle tube retaining plate can't be leaking,
and that it's just the O-ring. and you should put some silicone on it,
and that the bentley doesn't mention this. He also says the
retaining plate should be called a bell flange. and that the bentley
is known for not being entirely accurate.

my mechanic, says there's no way it would be leaking where it is, if it
were just the O-ring. and that the O-ring was good when he put it back together,
trying to rotate the "holes" to the top. I looked at the diagram in the bentley
and it looks to me that if it were the O-ring then it would definitely be
leaking out the edges of the whole retainer plate, and not just the weld holes
and the top of the seam between the two sections of the retainer plate.

so. I think we'll get the part anyhow from rancho. just to be safe.
and go from there. When we have the old retainer plate all the way off.
maybe I'll be able to tell if there really was some structural damage.

I suspect it was installed with too few gaskets, so that it was under so

stress that its welds broke. The gaskets are used as shims, to get just the
right amount of preload on these parts. If you didn't realize this and just
threw in a single gasket, like any other ordinary gasket, then you'd probably
be in trouble.

If you end up just fixing one side of this transmission, I would also CHECK
what's there on the other side. It's probably under stress there, too.<

A friend of mine just went thru this with his t-1 ghia. He had a similar
problem, and ended up sealing it with silicone (Rancho's recommendation). Of
course he also used a new "o" ring on his along with a couple of gaskets (he did
plenty of research before hand to get the clearances correct), and made sure
everything was spotlessly clean on assembly. According to him, his doesn't leak
any more. He's a tool maker, and is kinda like Keith about some stuff (this
being one of those). : )

I do agree, IRS is much simpler in this respect.
