So, what exactly does this z-bar do? I still don't quite get it, even from the posts so far. What am I trading off if I get rid of it.

It gives you a stiffer spring rate and greater load capacity once the rear end
has been loaded down. In spite of what the posts on this subject, I can't see
that it would help handling other than in stiffening the rear suspension.

The problem is that it works exactly the opposite of a sway bar. With a heavy
load, so that it is in effect, when you take a corner the body leans to the
outside. This Z-bar would transfer some weight to the inside of the car,
increasing the body lean. A sway bar would remove some weight from the inside
wheel to reduce the lean.

Except for giving the ability to carry heavier loads under rather tranquil
circumstances, I don't see the point.

This description of the Z bar makes me feel like it's a negative
to have it on there. which means I have to choose wether or not
to look for different parts.

I have found a guy near me that has these:

  http://herbie.ddv.com/~fess/tmp/type3/axles.html

which he says are from a '67, the flange on the retainer plate
looks right. but the missing z-bar flange, and the other
bracket there make me think it's something else.
