[T3] Z-bars. was: leaky transmission. [ strange one.. ]

<x-flowed>>

He thinks he might be mistaken on this now. saying that for bugs, this
type of flange on the axle retainer, ( and corresponding O ring seal. )
were only on '68 bugs. but they might have been there on '67 type
III's

It looks like your mechanic knows his stuff. The O-ring was only used on 67-on
swing axles. The axle tube looks like it is a special that had to be bought
with the retainer plate already in place. The left tube is 361 501 105A (has
white paint dot) and the right one is a 361 501 106A. Basically all these parts
were just used on the cars that got the Z-bar, which was 67-68, plus the late
M263 swing axles that we didn't get in the US and a few early M267 swing axles
that also came with the Z-bar.

Curious.....you say the z-bar was only on 67-68 swingaxles. Yet, Sophy has the z-bar. She is about a Jan 66 car based on her VIN number (366149035). Must have the M267 option.

I have actually been thinking about a modification that is mentioned on Bill Fisher's book to make the z-bar a full-time camber compensator by adding spacers so that it is in effect all of the time not just under heavy load. It apparently will make the rear a bit stiffer, but that would be ok. Anyone have experience with this modification?

various parts.....don't we all.
