Old worn points will usually work just fine, but they would generally take a 
THINNER feeler gauge to get the dwell right. I really encourage you to just get 
a decent dwell meter and go with that rather than do the whole feeler gauge 
thing.

The lower octane gas may make the engine knock, but that has nothing to do with 
the dwell.
