I agree that it's a pain to get at everything with the engine in the car, but 
for most people, who don't have access to a lift, I still think it's easier to 
do this in the car.

At Hershey  we took John J's engine out to replace a clutch disk. We had all 
the tools and jacks that we needed plus a virtually unlimited pool of eager 
labor. I think it still took us nearly 4 hours to do that job. This was on a 
swing axle carbed car with the heaters attached. It goes faster if the heater 
hoses are not there.

A swing axle carbed car with the heaters missing would be the easiest.

An IRS FI car with the heaters attached would be the hardest.

Frankly, I don't think this is too hard a job with the engine in place. The 
only hard part is getting some of the rusted screws out, and you have to do 
that either way.
