It sounds likely that your charging system isn't working correctly. This is 
quite common as they get older. They can work just enough to keep the idiot 
light from coming on, but not well enough to charge the battery.

I'm sending you my charging system FAQ. It explains everything you need to do 
to sort out problems in your charging system. You'll need a voltmeter (cheap is 
fine) to work your way thru it.
