[T3] painting the rear brake backs

Believe it or not we are beginning some small steps towards assembly. 
I am getting ready to paint some of the suspension bits. I was 
cleaning the  back plates for the rear brakes. This is a swing axle 
and where the axle bolts to the rear plates it looks like there was 
never any paint. There is a gasket that goes here I think. Should I 
leave the area where the gasket sits clear of paint - I think so 
judging by the look of this. But what did you do?
