This is a good lead. I googled on eastwood "hinge pin remover" and got lots of 
hits. It's eastwood tool # 31139 and costs $24.95. That's probably a good deal, 
especially if you can use it more than once.

Yes, they supply it with stainless steel pins, which are not nearly hard 
enough. Regular hard dowels are the correct way to go.
