I don't think anyone knows how many of these might have been made. Even if VW 
made quite a few in '66 (and I don't think they did,) they were still made only 
in that year and are quite rare today. Value is relative, of course, and 
depends on how eager the buyer is. No matter what, it sounds like you got a 
terrific bargain.

This certainly sounds like a good car for a careful restoration. Separating the 
body would only have to be done if it needed welded in rust repair in the

It's your car, and the choice is yours, but these changes are not in line with 
the concept of a restoration. In my opinion, it would be a shame to do this 
kind of thing to a car this rare and in such good original condition, even 
considering the rusty fenders.
