If it's shot, then it is probably already holding the flaps open. Look at it. 
If it has expanded up to the top of the frame it sits in then it's already 
open. The best thing to do is to just replace it. Don't let him talk you into 
just removing it permanently. This leads to slow warmup and greater engine 
wear. It won't out and out damage the engine, but the engine will just wear out 
faster.

It's important that the thermostat and all it's linkages be properly installed 
and working correctly.
