It's just the result of the GL-4 transmission oil being thicker in the cold
weather. In neutral the gears are just supposed to spin freely on their shafts,
but when the oil is thick they tend to drag the shaft along even though there
is no solid connection. Swing axle trannys were supposed to get their oil
changed every 30k miles, but regular changes were dropped later on. I still
like to see it changed occasionally, if only to see what kind of stuff comes
out....

You can buy GL-4 in various weights, so you may just need to pick a more
appropriate weight. Warm weather cars could get away with SAE 90, but cars
driven in temperate climates would do better with 80W-90.

What constitues cold weather where you live?
