You can see the difference between the two. The late one is from my '69
parts car. The fan housings are the same except for being 6V. The elbows
don't have the little tube. You can see where VW was making running
changes, as they have just spotwelded some extra pieces onto the very
early single carb tin.
And, IIRC, the cooling fan actually has fewer vanes in it. 
I would like to keep this engine as close to original (on the outside at
least) as possible.
